There is something for everyone to enjoy around Oberon.
The area is an adventure playground, with its heritage landmarks, National Parks, State Forests, Jenolan Caves and Lake Oberon.
It also offers world-class gardens to visit, excellent local produce to enjoy and a fabulous climate.
One of the largest privately-owned cool climate gardens in the Southern Hemisphere, covering more than 64 hectares (160 acres). Spend the afternoon exploring the stunning landscapes including the water garden, maze, chapel and cottage garden.
The most ancient open cave system in the world, the Jenolan Caves are a stunning natural highlight. Known as ‘Binoomea’ by the local Aboriginal people, the cave system spans a massive 40 kilometres and features multi-level passages, amazing underground rivers, and spectacular limestone formations.
The Oberon Tarana Heritage Railway is currently being restored and will soon bring one of the region’s most picturesque and heritage rail lines back into operation. The Oberon Railway Station is only a short stroll from our motel and has a heritage railway display. Regular Open Days are held on the first Saturday of each month.
The Art Deco Malachi Gilmore Hall, built in 1937, is a distinctive feature of Oberon’s main street. The venue offers a varied program of visual and performing arts with regular exhibitions and events.
Oberon Golf Club is a beautiful 18 hole course on the foreshore of Lake Oberon. This picturesque course offers many challenges, not the least of which is its hilly terrain. Golfers will be delighted by beautiful views of the lake along with abundant wildlife.
Three popular fishing spots are: Kelly’s Bay, the Reef Reserve and the Oberon Dam Picnic Area. Fishing is not permitted on the dam wall but many excellent fishing spots can be found along the foreshore between the wall and the golf course.
The Oberon region is known for its delicious truffles. Tours are available year-round at RedGround Truffles and include hunting for truffles with their truffle dogs and a truffle tasting experience.
Mushroom foraging generally runs from March to May with other wild food and medicinal plant foraging experiences all year. Head on a tour with the excellent Diego Bonetto who can teach you to safely harvest nature’s bounty.
The National Park features superb scenery, abundant wildlife, and opportunities for mountain biking, bushwalking and trout fishing.
The cellar door at Renzaglia Wines is open for tastings the last weekend of every month from 12-5pm. You’ll enjoy a wonderful afternoon of good wine and tasty grazing boards while overlooking the hills of the O’Connell valley.
Oberon Markets are held on the first Saturday of every month from 9am until 1pm at the Oberon Showground. Find locally grown fruit and vegetables, local art and craft plus delicious food, great coffee and entertainment.
The Oberon Museum features an 1880s weatherboard cottage, a restored Robinson heavy dray, the history of Oberon’s timber industry, and a pottery streetscape depicting Oberon’s main street in the 1930s. Open Wednesdays, Saturdays and Sundays, 10.30am till 12.30pm.
Oberon usually has three or four good snowfalls in winter. Often, a single snowfall will see snow lying around the higher areas of our district for 24 hours or so.
If a heavy fall of snow occurs, or there are snowfalls over a few days, then the snow can last for up to a week. Then our town becomes ‘Snowberon’
