Foodie Itinerary Oberon

2 nights | 3 days

Day 1

Arrive in Oberon and familiarise yourself with the lovely main street, a quick 200m walk from the Highlands Motor Inn. Don’t forget to grab a cup of coffee at the Pick of the Bunch Café or The Hub Café and Pizzeria.

Head out on your pre-booked truffle hunt with our friends Jill and Neil at RedGround Truffles (children 12 years and older welcome; bookings are essential, and dates vary based on availability). Public and private tours are available, and they include finding the truffles with their truffle dogs, grading the truffles and a delicious truffle tasting!

Then, have a fantastic wild foraging experience with the excellent Diego Bonetto, who can teach you to harvest nature’s bounty safely. Mushroom foraging runs from March to May, and there are wild food and medicinal plant foraging experiences all year. Check the website for details. Bookings are essential.

Head to one of our local wineries, like our friends at Renzaglia Wines (open by appointment or 12-5 p.m. the last weekend of every month), and grab a delicious bottle (or three) before indulging in a late afternoon snack or an early dinner at the Tarana Hotel (limited opening times) or Tarana’s monthly farmer markets (the last Sunday of each month), which have local produce and often have fabulous local-made salamis.

Check into your warm, welcoming room at the Highlands Motor Inn and have a delicious cup of complimentary tea, coffee or hot chocolate!

Day 2

Take an outing to Bathurst for the day (35-minute drive) and pick fresh apples, peaches, plums, or cherries (seasonal availability).

Book early to secure a table at the Australian Good Food Award-winning O’Connell Avenue Cafe & Store, or try our new favourite: the recently refurbished Victoria Bathurst (a great gastro pub).

If you’re lucky enough to be here when it’s open, be sure to have dinner at the Hungry Hare pop-up. And there’s traditional pub fare at the Royal Hotel in Oberon, or some delicious Thai food from the Thai restaurant at the golf club in Oberon! (But be sure to check their opening hours). On occasional Friday nights, The Milbrey Kitchen & Store does delicious 2 and 3-course dinners with an amazing array of dishes with local ingredients.

Or pay a visit to Antica Australis, an award-winning Italian slow food Locanda located in the charming historic village of Carcoar, about an hour and 15 minutes drive from Oberon. The cuisine is from the Central Italian region of Ciociaria, and they use ancient recipes and local produce sourced locally in the Orange region.

Day 3

If you like trains, consider high Tea on the Oberon Tarana Heritage Railway (first Saturday of the month). This railway is being restored, so check its website.

Then drive 17 minutes to the O’Connell Hotel or 40 minutes to Matt Moran’s sensational Rockley Pub for lunch.

Also, check out the local markets at Oberon, Tarana or Bathurst if you have time.
