Start your visit with lunch from one of the town’s bakeries or cafes, and enjoy a picnic lunch at Lake Oberon (free entry, BYO canoe/kayak/fishing rods), a serene spot only five minutes from the town centre (note there is a section of dirt road).
There’s great fishing if that’s what you’re into, or bring a canoe or kayak and go for a paddle. Fishing gear (including cheap kits for kids) can be purchased from Oberon Outdoor and Electronics in the town centre). Or just drink that delicious takeaway coffee you bought from the Pick of the Bunch Cafe, The Milbrey Kitchen & Store or The Hub in Oberon.
Check into the Highlands Motor Inn, enjoy the comfortable room, and have a warming cup of complimentary tea, coffee, or hot chocolate!
Drive to Mayfield Garden (entry fees apply), one of the largest privately owned cool-climate gardens in the Southern Hemisphere. Spend the afternoon exploring the stunning landscapes, including the water garden, maze, chapel, and cottage garden. You can grab a coffee or a bite to eat in their lovely cafe (bookings are recommended in peak season).
Head back to Oberon and visit the Oberon Golf Club for a round of golf.
If you’re lucky enough to be here when it’s open, be sure to have dinner at the Hungry Hare pop-up restaurant, or have traditional pub fare at the Royal Hotel in Oberon, or some delicious Thai food from the Thai restaurant at the golf club in Oberon.
The main street is only a 200m walk from the Highlands Motor Inn, so feel free to have a drink and safely walk home.
If you’re interested, head out and stargaze at night, as Oberon has minimal light pollution, making it an excellent spot for observing the night sky. But remember to bring some warm clothes!
Sadly, Jenolan Caves (costs apply) are temporarily closed. You can’t take a guided tour through the magnificent limestone caves, such as the Lucas Cave or the Chifley Cave, and marvel at the impressive formations.
Note that when the caves reopen, the road has been washed out and the alternate route can take longer than you think.
Pre-booking tickets is strongly advised. Visit the Jenolan Cave’s website and check with their team for access details.
Enjoy a leisurely drive (20 minutes) to our well-kept local secret: Kanangra-Boyd National Park. This little-known park has spectacular rugged cliffs, deep gorges, and panoramic views. Take a short hike along the Kanangra Walls track to enjoy breathtaking vistas of the wilderness.
OR
If that’s not your cup of tea, grab a cup of tea at Mumma Snow’s Country Kitchen in Tarana. It’s a lovely 20-minute drive and you can have a delicious meal at the Tarana Hotel (limited opening hours) or grab some local produce (including fantastic salamis) at the monthly Tarana Farmers’ Markets on the last Sunday of each month
Return to Oberon and explore the stores in town. Be sure to have a look at the recently restored Art Deco Malachi Gilmore Hall – the hall often holds events, including long table dinners, exhibitions, and chamber music festivals, so be sure to visit its website for upcoming events.
If you’re still hungry head to Oberon RSL and grab a bite from their restaurant (lunch and dinner Friday-Sunday) or play lawn bowls, squash, or use the pool tables.
Discover the beauty of the Oberon State Forest (20-minute drive) and go for a walk or cycle along the various trails. Enjoy the fresh air and immerse yourself in the peaceful surroundings.
If you’re a fan of trains, the Oberon to Tarana Heritage Railway is being restored by volunteers, and they have open days, working bees, and eventually, train rides!
If you’re driving back to Sydney, you could also detour via the recently restored Zig Zag Railway for an unforgettable ride.
